In response to this Senator Ian Gorst (broadcast on April 13th, 2020) said that imminent tax rises would be necessary to repay the “debt” that the States will need to borrow in order to support the economy after the Covid-19 outbreak.
This petition calls on the States of Jersey to curb public spending rather than raising taxes. In particular, civil service pay levels should be reviewed so they are in line with the Island’s average wages and public sector wages. There are currently 21 Civil Servants earning a total of £4.13m a year.
