Petition Reclassify tobacco so it is an illegal drug
Tobacco is highly harmful to individuals and society. It not only costs our health service a lot of money but causes various problems for those who are smokers, non-smokers and children. It is responsible for almost 1/3rd or our annual deaths.
120 deaths in Jersey were estimated to be attributable to smoking in 2018, representing 15% of all deaths in Jersey in that year and a third (34%) of deaths by conditions that can be caused by smoking.
890 hospital admissions were estimated to be attributable to smoking in 2018, representing 3% of all hospital admissions in Jersey and 30% of hospital admissions due to conditions that can be caused by smoking.
Around one in six (17%) of all babies born in Jersey in 2019 were living in a household where they may have been exposed to tobacco smoke by an adult.
With our Ministers' view on drug regulation being focused of health and safety for Islanders then the immediate reclassification of tobacco is called for.
