Closed petition Save the Senator in any electoral reform

On 3 December 2020, the States voted in principle to change Jersey's electoral system, including the full abolition of the role of Senator. The purpose was to deliver enhanced voter equity and equality. In achieving this, the States have also, ironically, removed the most democratic office of all.

More details

The purpose of P.139/2020 can be maintained alongside the retention of the Senators. This simply involves removing one Deputy from each district and re-instating 8 Senators. As it currently stands, every voter in Jersey will have their influence over the make-up of the States, and the Government, significantly reduced under P.139. We will all have fewer votes. This will not enhance civic engagement in the Island - losing the Senators will impact negatively on the political debate across Jersey.
