Many politicians and islanders seem unaware that 36% of couples/families in Jersey would face a materially higher tax bill under mandatory independent taxation. One family is facing a tax bill increase of 334%, and another couple 187% (one spouse has cerebral palsy and is unable to work).

The purpose of updating Jersey’s tax legislation is to provide fairness for all, especially for women. But the draft legislation (with no option for joint taxation) creates a tax increase by stealth as the compensatory allowance decreases, hurting lower earners the most. Jersey's politicians want to protect women from economic abuse, but they end up economically abusing thousands of islanders by stealth while raising £9.5m for the government every year.
