Petition Stop homework in primary, and reduce mandatory homework in secondary schools

We believe that homework is unnecessary and can have negative consequences. Students already spend six hours a day at school, during which they are actively learning, and have access to teachers providing help and support. At home, students lack this help, and have less time for hobbies and friends.

Evidence supports reducing or eliminating homework due to its stress, inequity, and lack of academic benefits. The Jersey 2024 survey found nearly half of secondary students often worry about schoolwork. Research shows minimal academic gains for younger students. Homework exacerbates inequality: 10% of wealthier families lack homework space vs. nearly half of poorer families. It also strains family relationships and reduces students’ quality of life, making it counterproductive.
