Petition Bring in legislation to establish a Jersey energy regulator
I believe Jersey should have an independent energy regulator to reflect the critical role energy supply and distribution plays here and the vulnerability of the Island in this area. I believe the current regulation of Jersey Electricity Company (JEC), as a monopoly, is not sufficient.
More details
The JEC is regulated by the Electricity (Jersey) Law 1937 which allows the States to determine tariffs made by the Company where it appears “necessary so to do in the public interest” (Article 22(1)) but the Treasury Minister has stated that she thinks “those powers would have to be exercised very, very cautiously” (OQ-88-2025). Yet many Islanders, myself included, have experienced unusually high electricity usage rates and bills without any clear explanation which I believe is unacceptable. The JEC is regulated by the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority, but I believe the JEC and other energy suppliers and distributors should be monitored by an energy regulator, like Ofgem in the UK, as the most effective means of protecting energy consumers on the Island.
