Petition Extend the Aarhus Convention to Jersey – our right to health, safety and justice
The Aarhus Convention guarantees the right to know, be heard, and seek justice when the environment is at risk. Jersey didn't sign up in 2001 as we lacked an FOI law. That law came into force in 2015. It’s now 2025 and we still don’t have our rights to know, speak, or protect our health and island.
More details
In 2004, a settlement, unpublished at the time, was agreed between the States and 3M over PFOS pollution. The Aarhus Convention “sets out obligations on Parties to make provisions for the public to access environmental information, to participate in environmental decision-making and to access justice when challenging environmental decisions.”* Jersey still hasn’t joined. Meanwhile, PFAS, nitrates, and pollution continue to pose a threat to Islanders’ health. It’s time for change. Jersey must join the Convention to empower us to protect our island and our health. We deserve health protection, transparency, accountability, and the right to know. Not in another decade — but now.
