Petition Only candidates who face an opponent & win an election should sit in the States
If a candidate stands unopposed it is not a genuine democratic election. Most Constables stand unopposed, often following informal succession or encouragement by predecessors. Even with the recent introduction of “None of the Above” this is not a real competition, it is selection—not democracy.
More details
In the 2022 Parish elections, 8 out of 12 candidates stood unopposed ('22 Election Results | Vote.je), giving voters no real choice. Several parishes have not held a contested Constable election for multiple election cycles. This pattern shows that many Constables are effectively selected by default, not through genuine democratic competition, weakening voter representation in the States Assembly.
The States Assembly can set and modify the rules dictating who can be elected. I am calling on the States to set rules that ensure that only candidates who have faced real competition gain a seat in the Assembly
